01Show the working cockpit+
Photograph the benches, coamings, controls and normal access routes. Mark any cushions removed before sailing and identify existing obstructions so the upholstery plan does not create new ones.
02Choose divisions that are easy to handle+
Long bench cushions may be awkward to carry through a companionway or store below. Discuss individual sections, their joins and the space available before deciding that fewer seams must mean a better layout.
03Keep attachments and stowage practical+
Show how the current pieces stay in place and how they release. Agree accessible fixing positions and an appropriate storage routine; loose upholstery is not a substitute for the boat’s safety equipment or secure working surfaces.

Can the cockpit cushions stay in place while sailing?
That depends on the vessel, conditions, attachment arrangement and the owner or skipper’s operating decisions. Tell Josh which pieces you normally remove so the design reflects that routine.
Can you make longer cushions to remove some joins?
Possibly, subject to the supported shape, locker access and storage route. Show the full seat length and the narrowest opening the cushion must pass through.
