01Choose your fixed reference+
Start with the largest finish you are retaining: timber, painted metal or a woven frame. Photograph it in ordinary daylight and note any planned refinishing, because a future paint or oil treatment may change the relationship.
02Compare warm and cool directions+
Place two or three actual fabric samples together against the frame. Look for a deliberate relationship rather than an exact screen match. A warm neutral can soften a cool frame; a blue or sage direction can introduce a different mood.
03Build the supporting accents last+
Choose scatters and piping after the main fabric. Keep enough contrast for the edges to read if that is the intention, or choose a quieter relationship when the furniture shape should lead.

You can shortlist, but approve it against the intended finished surface where possible. Show Josh the planned finish as well as the current furniture.
Must the piping match the frame?
No. It can match the cushion, echo another material or provide contrast. Compare the actual samples before deciding.
