A CLOSER LOOK / PERSONALLY CONSIDERED

From swatch to seating.

Colour is only the beginning. Compare the material in the light of your space, then consider the cushion profile and the finish at its edges.

  • Material. Confirm the precise collection and feel using physical samples.
  • Construction. Agree the pattern, cushion depth and fastening details.
  • Finish. Bring piping, seams and border stitching into one direction.

OCEAN BREEZE JOURNAL / PROJECT GUIDANCE

How to Prepare Boat Cushion Measurements & Patterns

A practical starting guide to identifying boat cushions, reference dimensions, curves and fixing details before a pattern or survey is agreed.

Photograph the arrangement first.

Begin with the whole seating area while the cushions are still fitted. Take views from more than one angle, then photograph each piece and its underside. If cushions form a berth, include the sleeping arrangement too. This shows how the pieces relate to the furniture and to one another.

Create a simple piece list: location, number, approximate size and anything unusual about the shape. Label left and right from an agreed viewing direction rather than relying on a photograph being interpreted correctly. Keep the labels with the pieces if they are removed.

Reference dimensions are different from a finished pattern.

Overall width, depth and thickness help establish scope. They do not fully describe a tapered edge, radiused corner or three-dimensional backrest. Include reference measurements in photographs where useful, and note whether they refer to the foam, the finished cover or the seat base.

Do not cut a manufacturing pattern simply by adding a generic allowance to the old cover. Cover stretch, wear, seam layout and the new foam profile can change the finished fit. Josh agrees the pattern and construction route for the actual pieces.

Using supplied pattern material.

For suitable removable cushions or seat bases, Ocean Breeze can discuss sending pattern material with instructions. Mark the front edge, outline, reference lines and fixing positions required for the piece. Record joins, openings and any parts that must remain accessible.

Photograph the marked material in position and retain a record of the dimensions. Agree the return method and labelling before dispatch. The patterns are reviewed with the chosen foam and cover construction before manufacture is approved.

When an onboard survey is the better route.

Fixed curved lounges, altered joinery and complex access can make remote templates insufficient. A physical assessment may be needed to resolve profiles, fixing points and relationships between seat and back. A 3D scan can support selected surveys, alongside measurements and hands-on checks.

Send the photographic brief first. It allows Josh to discuss which measurement method is appropriate, what material or existing pieces are needed and who will confirm the fit at installation.

Useful questions.

Are phone photographs enough to manufacture from?

They can establish the initial scope, but final manufacture requires an agreed specification and suitable geometry information. Depending on the pieces, this may mean patterns, measurements, physical assessment or a survey.

Should I send the old covers or the complete cushions?

Agree that with Josh first. A cover may show the seam layout, while foam and the fitted arrangement help establish the profile and comfort requirements.

Apply it to your project.
