A CLOSER LOOK / PERSONALLY CONSIDERED

From swatch to seating.

Colour is only the beginning. Compare the material in the light of your space, then consider the cushion profile and the finish at its edges.

  • Material. Confirm the precise collection and feel using physical samples.
  • Construction. Agree the pattern, cushion depth and fastening details.
  • Finish. Bring piping, seams and border stitching into one direction.

Marine Upholstery: Woven Fabric or Coated Material?

Compare the feel, application and construction of yacht seating materials before choosing an exact Spradling, Sunbrella or Agora reference.

Start with the place it will live.

A cockpit bench, a sunpad and an interior saloon can have different material requirements. Describe the exposure, storage, intended use and retained surroundings before choosing a brand or colour. A material that works in one area should not automatically be specified across the whole yacht.

The important decision is the exact product and construction. Broad terms such as marine fabric, outdoor fabric or vinyl do not describe every range’s finish, backing, application or care requirements.

Woven texture changes the visual character.

A woven upholstery fabric can introduce a softer visual texture and a more relaxed coastal palette. Compare the weave beside joinery, teak and retained cushions. Look at the exact material sample from close up and from the distance at which the whole set will be viewed.

Sunbrella and Agora offer ranges in the studio library. Shortlist the colour and texture there, then confirm the actual product information and physical sample with Josh. Screen colour and texture scale are approximate, including in the seating visualiser.

Coated materials deserve the same attention.

A coated upholstery material may provide a different appearance and tactile finish. Compare grain, colour, sheen and the way piping works with the chosen surface. Spradling ranges in the library have distinct product references and application information; the brand name alone is not a specification.

Ask about the complete piece: foam, backing, seams, zips, underside and fixings. Material selection and cushion construction are related decisions, particularly where pieces stay outside or must be removable for storage.

Approve a sample, not a screen.

Save the material references for main upholstery, backrests, accents and piping. Include the preferred thread colour and whether diamond detail belongs on a border. A saved palette makes the discussion clearer without turning an approximate render into final approval.

Use the manufacturer’s care guidance for the exact fabric or coated material that is ultimately selected. Avoid a universal cleaning recipe across different products. Keep the agreed reference and care information with the finished commission.

Useful questions.

Is one brand always best for every boat seat?

No. The exact range, seating use, exposure, feel and cover construction determine suitability. Josh can discuss the options against your brief.

Can a fabric preview show the final stitch size?

It is an approximate design preview. Confirm thread, border width, stitch proportion and the final seam layout for your actual piece before manufacture.

Apply it to your project.
