HELM SEAT UPHOLSTERY / CONSIDERED IN DETAIL

A working position.
A personal fit.

01A working position. A personal fit.

The helm seat is used differently from an aft lounge. Tell Josh how you sit, where support feels tired and whether the seat has bolsters, armrests or moving sections. Cover design should account for those features rather than concealing their function.

Photograph the seat upright, tilted or opened where relevant. Include the pedestal, concealed fasteners and the join between upholstery and shell. If the seat can be removed, agree how it will be handled before separating it from the vessel.

02Make the border the signature.

Explore a clean main seating surface with diamond stitching on the border, a contrasting thread and a crisp piping line. The studio lets you compare colours; the final panel layout, seam placement and material choice are developed around your actual seat.

Explore Spradling, Sunbrella and Agora with Josh. Compare the exact range, texture and colour using physical samples, then agree the materials, foam and construction before manufacture.

03A position with its own requirements.

Show the complete helm seat, its base and backrest, rather than only the damaged panel. Note clearance to the console, armrests and any retained moving parts. The cover layout, support and finishing detail need to belong to the actual assembly.

BEFORE THE FIRST CUT

Your practical questions.

Can the helm seat shape be changed?

Discuss the existing frame and the support you want. Any changes to shape, arms or bolsters are assessed against the seat construction and available space.

What should I photograph at the helm?

Include the complete seat, its underside and fixings, the controls around it and any adjustable positions. This helps identify access and retained components.

Can I choose the thread and piping colours?

Yes. Discuss both with the main fabric and any border detail. Digital colours are a starting point; physical samples and the agreed specification determine the finished materials.

How do I start an enquiry?

Send the vessel type, current marina or yard, photographs and preferred work window. Describe the result you want and who will approve it. Josh can discuss the next steps; a final specification and schedule are agreed before manufacture.

How are collection and fitting arranged?

The route depends on whether pieces are removable, the survey requirements and the vessel’s location. Agree packing, handling, transport and installation responsibilities with Josh before sending anything.

Can the helm match the rest of the cockpit?

Include the surrounding seating in the brief. The palette and border treatment can connect them while the helm’s profile and construction are considered separately.

Can the original helm foam be kept?

Discuss its condition, current support and the desired finished profile. Retaining it is assessed alongside the new cover fit, rather than assumed from the photographs alone.

HELM SEATING

A better seat starts with how you use it.

Your helm seat is a working position. Shape, support and movement belong in the brief alongside colour and finish.

01Your position

Describe how you sit or stand at the helm and the areas where support has changed. A photograph of the seat in position helps explain the space.

02Moving parts

Show armrests, bolsters and adjustment mechanisms. Upholstery thickness must be considered around their movement and access.

03The scope of work

Agree which trim and filling will be renewed and what remains. Mechanical repairs or changes to the mounting are a separate discussion.

Three useful photographs to start with
  1. The seat from the front and side
  2. Bolsters and armrests in both positions
  3. Accessible underside and mounting details

You can begin without photographs and send them later. Collection and production dates are agreed separately.
